R. K. Selvamani Biography

R. K. Selvamani is a successful film director of Tamil known for making whodunit genre movies. He is married to one of the leading Tamil actress of 1990’s – Roja. Together, they have associated in many Tamil movies like - Kuttrapathirikai, Makkal Aatchi, Chembaruthi, Raja Muthiraiand Adimai Changili. He also directed Roja’s 100th film – Durga in Telugu. Before making independent movies, he has worked as assistant of Manivannan. Apart from direction, Selvamani has produced two movies – Auran and Rajali. He also wrote the story of Asuran.

 

He belongs to Thirumukkadal, Chingleput of Tamil Nadu. He assisted Manivannan in many Tamil projects before venturing into independent projects. Once he narrated a storyline to Vijayakanth. He liked the storyline and insisted Selvamani narrate the story to film producer Ibrahim Rowther, who is a friend of Vijayakanth. This movie was an action thriller, Pulan Visaranai (1990) which was partly based on a real life confession by criminal Auto Shankar. The movie starred Vijayakanth, Rupini, Anandaraj, Radha Ravi and Sarathkumar in lead roles. The movie reviewed positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success, thus marking the successful beginning of this director’s career. Captain Prabhakaran (1991) was his second release, which was a similar thriller. Though the movie was titled paying homage to LTTE leader Prabhakaran, the storyline was based on the forest brigand Veerappan. The movie too was a big success.

 

His third film was Kuttrapathirikai, with Ramki and Rahman in the lead roles, while Ramya Krishnan and Roja in pivot roles. This movie used Rajiv Gandhi's assassination and the Sri Lankan civil war as its backdrop and hence censor board refused to release it. It was released only in 2007 with several cuts. His other releases are Chembaruthi, Adimai Changili, Arasiyal and Rajasthan. After a short break, he has announced his future plans to direct one movie, Kannivedi featuring newcomers.
