Putul Kumari Biography

Putul Kumari is an Indian politician from Bihar belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party. She is the widow of leading political figure, Digvijay Singh – a 5-time parliamentarian and former union minister. Putul too is a famous politician, who currently serves as a member of Lok Sabha representing Banka constituency. In July 2018 she was elected as BJP state vice president. Her daughter Shreyasi Singh is a golf player who won a gold medal in the Shooting at the 2018 Commonwealth in Women's double trap and a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games event. She has one more daughter from her marriage with Digvijay Singh, Mansi Singh.

 

Putul Kumari hails from Pali, Patna. Jang Bahadur Singh and Lalghari Devi were her parents. She studied from Patna University. She got married to Digvijay Singh and had two daughters. After his death in 2010 following an official visit to London for the Commonwealth Games, Putul got actively involved in politics. She was present with him in London while he was undergoing treatment for brain haemorrhage. She got elected to lok Sabha through a by-election in 2010 following her husband’s death. Currently a parliamentarian, she is holding the Banka seat, earlier held by her husband.

 

Apart from her political career, she is quite interested in social work too. She is best known for promoting primary education of children. She also arranges health camps, free meals and mass marriages for poor girls, mostly belonging to SC and ST. She is also associated with many NGOs, charitable organizations and hospitals and Gidhaur Mohotsava Annual Festival. She is also a promoter of sports. In fact her daughter Shreyasi Singh is international-level trap shooter with 2 Commonwealth game medals. Her husband served as the President of The National Rifle Association of India since 1999, till his death.
