Puthussery Ramachandran Biography

Professor Puthussery Ramachandran is an accomplished Malayalam writer best associated with poetry. He is a scholar of Dravidian linguistics and is an academician with three decades of experience in teaching. His major works as a writer are Utsavabali, Kannassa Ramayanam, Grameena Gayakan, Puthiyakollanum Puthiyoralayum, Keralcharitrathinte Adisthanarekhakal, Aavunnathra Uchchathil etc. Apart from poetry, he has also done prose work, translations, Critical Editions etc. He has also authored books in English. His poetry has been translated into Hindi, English and Tamil languages and published in various journals. In 1999 he received Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Overall Contributions, and many other honours including the prestigious Ezhuthachan Puraskaram.

 

Puthussery Ramachandran hails from Kollam. His higher education was completed at Sree Narayana College, Kollam and University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram. He started as lecturer at Sree Narayana College, Kollam in 1957 and owns 32 years of experience in the field of teaching till his retirement. He taught at different colleges, and retired as Professor of Malayalam and Dean of Oriental Faculty in 1988. After that he dedicated most of his time towards writing.

 

Apart from teaching and writings, he also held some elite positions in different organizations, such as Honorary Director of International Centre for Kerala Studies in University of Kerala, member of the Syndicate of the University of Kerala, General Secretary of First World Conference on Malayalam language and Kerala Culture in 1977 and many more.

 

He published his first poem, Onnanthyakkuttam, in 1944 at the age of 16. He is a recipient of three Sahitya Akademi awards, Asan Smaraka Kavitha Puraskaram, Yesenin Award, Russia, Thoppil Bhasi Award, Ezhuthachan Puraskaram etc. He is a founder member of C. Achutha Menon Foundation. Language of Middle Malayalam, Perspectives in Place Name Studies, Studies in Dravidian Place Names and Ellis on Malayalam Language are his published works in English.
