Pushkar Bhan Biography

Pushkar Bhan was a renowned theatre personality, radio actor and script writer from Srinagar, Kashmir. He was a famous dramatist, director and a scriptwriter who acted in many plays too. Some of his early plays - Dwadi Majnun, Tan tadakh, and Yuth lwakichar became extremely popular in Kashmir. These plays became an integral part of Jammu and Kashmir Cultural Congress movement in the 1950s. He launched the first daily radio feature in Kashmiri, Zuni Dab, which won him the honour Padma Sri in 1974. Machamaa - a collection of his humorous plays earned him Sahitya Academy Award for the year 1976. His Kashmiri serial Zoon Dab was aired for long 19 years. This renowned artist passed away on October 5, 2008.

 

He was born in Srinagar in 1925/1926. Right from his childhood, he got drawn towards theatre and wanted to get associated with it. He completed his graduation in the year 1947. Very soon he got associated with the Cultural Forum of the National Cultural Front, a time of Indian independence. He wrote plays in Urdu and Kashmiri. Lalkar in Urdu and his 'Ya Tan Ya Tadakh' earned him appreciation. He also showcased his talents as a stage actor through the plays - Bombur Yamburzol, Shahid Sherwani and Yeh Kashmir Hai. When the first Television Broadcasting Channel was established in Srinagar, he became extremely popular through the comedy sitcom - Doctor Zero.

 

He co-scripted the plays - Grand Rehearsal in 1967, Chapath in 1973, and Nev Nosh in 1975, aside Som Nath Sadhu, and also delivered outstanding performances in these three. He acted with renowned Bollywood actor Raj Kapoor. Machami in 1970 is regarded as his finest performance as an actor and this play was later serialized on radio. Chapath, Nev Nosh and Bhavya Purvabhyas are among his noted plays honoured by Kashmir State's Academy of Art and Literature. After his retirement from government service, he dedicated his full time in writing.
