Puripanda Appala Swamy Biography

Puripanda Appala Swamy was a Telugu writer, linguist and journalist. He has translated a few works to Telugu, and has also served as an editor for a few publications. He was also a freedom fighter who participated in Non-cooperative movement, Harijan upliftment and Khadi Prachar movement. He also served as an organizer in All India Charaka Sangham at Visakhapatnam, and has been associated with some regional agitations like Library Movement. He was a freelancer journalist, and also an editor. He published 'Vaisakhi', a monthly magazine. He was awarded Kalaprapoorna by Andhra University in 1973.

 

Puripanda Appala Swamy, also spelled Puripanda Appalaswamy, was born on 13 November 1904 in Salur, Vizianagaram district. Since childhood he learned a number of languages such as Sanskrit, Oriya, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu and English. He also actively participated in freedom struggle movement since his younger days. He had a distinguished career as a journalist. Apart from writing columns for Andhra Patrika for long 12 years, he also served as an associate editor for 'Swasakti', a national newspaper. He is also credited to discover the writing talent of noted Telugu writer, Srirangam Srinivasa Rao. Amrutha Santanam and Matti Manushulu are his translation works.

 

He has been associated with library movement of Andhra Pradesh, and opened libraries at different places. As a linguistic, he has authored books on different languages. Some of his published works are – Srimadbhagavatam, Valmiki Ramayanam, Mahabharatam, Sridevi Bhagavatam, History of Bengali Literature, Ratna Patakam, Vishwa Kala Veedhi, Mohammad Charitra, Soudamini, Jagadguru Shankaracharya, Hangary Viplavam etc. In 2005, a statue of this writer was erected on the Beach Road at Vishakhapatnam on the eve of his birth centenary. He died on 18 November 1982 aged 78.
