Pulin Behari Das Biography

Pulin Behari Das was an Indian revolutionary from Bengal who lived during the period - 24 January 1877 and 17 August 1949. He is the founder-president of the Dhaka Anushilan Samiti. Later he got influenced by a yogi and got a feeling of detachment from physical world. Later Bangiya Byayam samiti was successfully run by his second son Sourendra till 2005 and presently his grandchildren are in the attempt to rebuild it, seeking help from government and professionals.

He was born as Naba Kumar Das in Faridpur in 1877. His father was an advocate. He completed his college education at Dacca and during his college studies itself he was a lab assistant and an illustrator. He was a very good lathial and hence opened an akhara at Tikatuli in 1903 where he trained people in fencing and lathikhela. In 1906, he was nominated to organize the Dhaka chapter of the Anushilan Samiti by none other than Bipin Chandra Pal. Subsequently he founded the Dhaka chapter with 80 young men. Later the organization branched to more than 500 branches. He also founded the National School in Dhaka to train students for revolutionary purposes.

Though he tried to murder Basil Copleston Allen, the erstwhile District Magistrate of Dhaka on 23 December 1907, he couldn’t succeed. In 1908, Pulin organized the sensational Barrah Dacoity and got arrested along with his associates. He was released from jail in 1918 and kept in home arrest for one more year. Though he tried to revive the activities of the Samiti, he couldn’t as its members had already shattered in different places. Though the majority of the surviving revolutionaries decided to accept Gandhi principles and participate in Non-Cooperation Movement he refused to accept it and Gandhi’s leadership.

He founded the Bharat Sevak Sangh in 1920 to continue with his revolutionary principles. He published two periodicals Hak Katha and Swaraj and also criticized the principles of non-violence. His conflicting ideas surfaced resulting in the dissolution of Bharat Sevak Sangha and he retired from active politics in 1922.
