Pudhumaipithan Biography

Pudhumaipithan was one of the most influential and revolutionary writers of Tamil fiction during 20th century. Giving significant contributions to Tamil literature, he died at a younger age of just 42. Social satire, progressive thinking and outspoken criticism of accepted conventions were the trademark characteristics of his works. Contemporary writers and critics often found it difficult to accept his views, but now warmly accepted by present day writers as well as critics. In 2002, the Government of Tamil Nadu nationalised the works of Pudumaippithan.

 

Pudhumaipithan was born in Thiruppadirippuliyur on 25 April 1906 as C. Viruthachalam. His schooling was done at Gingee, Kallakurichi and Tindivanam. He graduated in Arts from Tirunelveli Hindu College in 1931 and same year got married and moved to Chennai. His literal career began in the year 1933 with an essay "Gulabjaan Kaadhal" published in the magazine Gandhi. His first short story "Aatrangarai Pillaiyaar" was published in 1934 in "Manikodi". It was followed by a series of short stories in the same magazine. Later he wrote short stories regularly for Kalaimakal, Jothi, Sudantira Chanku, Oozhiyan and Thamizh Mani. He worked briefly as a sub editor at Oozhiyan, Dina mani and Dinasari. He joined Dinasari in the year 1943. He published - "Pudhumaipithan Kadhaigal", his collection of short stories in the year 1940.

 

He is also known as a screenwriter of Tamil movies, with Avvaiyaar and KaamaValli being the noted works. In 1945, he started "Parvatha Kumari Productions" and made a failure attempt to produce one movie. While working for the movie "Raja Mukthi” he contracted tuberculosis. He died on 5 May 1948 at Thiruvananthapuram. Many of his short stories got published posthumously in various anthologies, the latest one being in 2000.
