Pu Lalthanhawla Biography

Pu Lalthanhawla is the current Chief Minister of Mizoram and has been serving the position since December 11, 2008. He belongs to Indian National Congress. He was elected to 2008 Assembly elections from Serchhip and South Tuipui. He started his career as Recorder in the office of Inspector of Schools in the District Council and later moved to active politics. He currently resides in Zarkawt Veng, Aizawl.

Pu Lalthanhawla was born on May 6, 1942 as the son of Hmartawnphunga Sailo and Lalsawmliani Chawngthu. He completed schooling in 1958 and intermediate in 1961. Later he joined Aijal College, from where he became a graduate in Arts. After studies, he started his career as Recorder in the office of Inspector of Schools in the District Council. Later he became an assistant at Assam Co-operative Apex Bank. In 1966, he joined the Mizo National Front and the following year he became a member of the Indian National Congress party. In 1973 he was elected as Congress Party President of Mizoram. In 1978 and 1979 he was elected as a Legislator in Union Territory Elections. In 1984, Congress came to power under the leadership of Pu Lalthanhawla and the party swept the seats. Pu Lalthanhawla sworn in as chief minister of Mizoram for the first time.

 
In 1986, he gave up his chief minister power when the Peace accord was signed between India and MNF. In the first State MLA elections of Mizoram in 1987, he was a candidate and won the elections to become the chief minister of Mizoram for the second term. He has been re-elected in the 1989 and 1993 Elections also. But in 1998, he lost his seat but returned with 2003 Assembly elections. Currently he serves as the Chief Minister of Mizoram and President of Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee.
