Prosenjit Chatterjee Biography

Prosenjit Chatterjee is a well known film actor from Bengali cinema. He is fondly called Bumba da. He is also known by the name Poshenjith. Since 2003 with Rituparno Ghosh's Chokher Bali, co-starring Aishwarya Rai he is one among the most popular actors of Bengal up to date. In the year 2007, for the movie Dosar directed by Rituparno Ghosh, he won best actor awards of Bengal Film Journalists’ association. He received National Award Silver Lotus award for the same role in 2007. He has acted about 300 movies till now. Prosenjit is the only son of Biswajeet, the popular romantic hero of Bollywood during 1960’s. He has also directed a popular television serial of Bengali, Kanakanjali along with his wife, Arpita. Earlier he had two broken marriages – First one with actress Debashree Roy and second one with Aparna Guhathakurta.

 

Prosenjit made his debut when he was just four years old in his father's Chhotto Jignasa. The movie released in the year 1969 was a big hit at box office. His role as child artist won audience hearts as well. But he preferred to study than to work in movies. He attended Calcutta Airport English High School, St. Xavier's Collegiate School and St. Xavier's College, Calcutta. When he was 16, his parents divorced. rosenjit was left with the responsibility of his family consisting of his mother and little sister Pallavi Chatterjee, an actress of Bengal at present.

 

He made his debut as hero in Duti Pata (1983), a teenage romance story. It was something like a new experience to Bengali movies and the movie run successfully for months in many leading theatres. Amar Shangi (1987) opposite Vijayeta Pandit is one of the milestone movies of his career. Next most popular movies are Apon Amaar Apon (1990) directed by Tarun Majumder and Ami, Yaseen Aar Amaar Madhubala (2007) directed by Buddhadeb Dasgupta.
