Premlata Agarwal Biography

Premlata Agarwal is an Indian mountaineer, who became the first Indian woman to scale the Seven Summits, the seven highest continental peaks of the world. In 2011, she registered a new record when she scaled Mount Everest and became the oldest Indian woman to achieve this feat. She was 48 years old then. However this record was later broken by Sangeeta Sindhi Bahl in 2018 at the age of 53. For her contributions towards the field of mountaineering, Government of India honoured her with the fourth highest civilian honour - Padma Shri in 2013.

Premlatha hails from Darjeeling, West Bengal. She was born in 1963. She started mountaineering during her mid ages at the age of 36. Yet she registered some of the best achievements to her name, in the past 10-15 years and marked her among the top Indian women mountaineers all-time. She took part in a hill climbing competition in Jamshedpur, which changed her life forever. She was later trained and mentored by Bachendri Pal, the iconic figure associated with mountaineering.

She was part of a 22-member eco-Everest expedition team, and spent over a month climbing around Everest Base Camps to acclimatise. She also did a climbing exercise at 20,300-feet-high Island Peak in the Himalayas. Thus she started her expedition on 6 May 2011. An hour before reaching the summit she lost one of her gloves. As it was difficult to climb without gloves, she decided to return back. Just like a miracle, she found a pair of left cloves which helped her to reach the destination. It helped her to create a record in her name, as the oldest Indian woman scale the highest peak on earth – Mount Everest. Her feats are listed in the Limca Book of Records.
