Premendra Mitra Biography

Premendra Mitra was a noted writer and film director from Bengal. He was a short story writer and novelist. He is known for thriller works as well and was verse in science fiction works. His first book of poetry was Prothoma published in 1932. Piprey Puran and Mangalbairi are his most popular short stories. His works also include ghost stories, fairy tales, teenager stories, fun stories and fiction works. His published novels are Agamikal, Paank, Michhil, Protidhwoni Fere, Uponayon, Protishod and Kuasha. In 1957 he received Sahitya Akademi Award for Sagor Theke Fera. Nehru Award from Soviet Russia in 1976, Vidya Sagar Puraskar in 1984, Deshikottam from Visva Bharati in 1988, Ananda Puraskar in 1973, Rabindra Puraskar in 1958 and Shishu Sahitya Puraskar by Govt. of West Bengal in 1958 for Ghanada series are other major honours and awards received by Mitra. In 1981, he received honorary doctorate from Burdwan University.

 

Mitra was born in Varanasi in the year 1904. His father was an employee of the Indian Railways and as a result, Mitra got opportunity to travel a lot of places. He lost his mother at a younger age and he was taken care of by his grandparents. He studied at South Suburban School (Main) and later joined BA fromthe Scottish Church College in Kolkata. But he left the course to join Shantiniketan to do an agriculture course. He lost interest in that course too and later did an undergraduate course in Dhaka. Later he studied natural science and started his career as a teacher too. Trying to land in several professions, at last he took writing as his profession.

 

He published his first book on poetry in the year 1932. A few more poetic works include – Somrat, Feraari Fouj, Sagor Theke Fera, Horin Cheeta Chil and Khuda wahid. His short story collections are Dhuli Dhusor, Sreshto Golpo, PonchoShor, Benami Bandar and a few more. He died on May 3, 1988.
