Prem Adib Biography

Prem Adib was a popular actor of Hindi cinema who has portrayed numerous mythological roles on screen. He played the lead role of Lord Rama in the mythological film - Ram Rajya (1946), its significance being the only film watched by Mahatma Gandhi in his life time. He also played the role of Rama in the film - Bharat Milap in 1942, the role for which he is remembered most. Prem Adib and Shobhana Samarth portrayed the "ideal Rama and Sita" in both these films, followed by Rambaan (1948), and all these three movies were inspired from epic Ramayana.

 

His real name is Shiv Prasad Dhar. He was born into a Kashmiri family on 10 August 1917 in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh. His ancestors migrated to Faizabad Uttar Pradesh from Kashmir during the rule of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah. His father Ram Prakash Dhar later shifted to Sultanpur where Shiv Prasad was born. His father was a lawyer by profession and later they changed their surname from Dhar to Adib. Since childhood Shiv Prasad was inclined towards cinema. With the new era of talkies, film medium became popular among the masses and Shiv Prasad left his home to Kolkata in search of film roles. But he was unsuccessful. He then travelled to Lahore and finally to Mumbai.

 

Romantic India released in 1936 marked his film debut. His first offer was given by director Mohan Sinha, grandfather of actress Vidya Sinha. The director rechristened him as Prem Adib. He continued with minor roles. Industrial India in 1938 marked his debut in lead role.  The movie was also directed by Mohan Sinha and Shobhana Samarth played his female lead. During a career span of 25 years, he appeared in 67 movies, of which his role as Ram is remembered most. He shot to fame playing mythological roles in the 1940s, an era fully dominated with such films.

 

He once had a legal battle with a minor actress Raj Rani for breach of contract related to work. He died in 1959 at the age of 42. He was fully active in films that time and his last film – Angulimaal was released posthumously in 1960. He played a supporting role in the movie.
