Pravin Darji Biography

Pravin Darji is an Indian writer belonging to Gujarati literature. For his contributions towards Indian literature, government of India honoured him with Padma Shri in 2011. Same year he also received Kumar Suvarna Chandrak. Some of his major works include - Spand (1976), Charvana (1976), Dayarama (1978) and Pratyagra (1978). He is also known as a literary critic, translator and serves as an editor too. The author is best known as a poet.

Pravin Darji was born on 23 August 1944 in Mahelol village in Panchmahal district of Gujarat, during British rule in India. He took graduation in both Gujarati and Sanskrit languages, and also completed his MA and PhD. As a lecturer he began his career in 1965 and was associated with the same field till his retirement. He joined Lunavada College as a Professor in 1967 and worked there for so many years till his retirement. Darji married Ramila and had three children.

As a writer he contributed in the form of fiction and non-fiction works – essays, autobiographies, travelogues, poetry etc. He published a series of essay collections - Pancham, Gata Zarana, Ayakhana Ank, Sannikat, Madhyabinduna Kamp, Dadami Te Chakshu, Pariprashna, Motino Charo, Darbhankur, Venurav, Adakhe Padakhe, Leelaparna, Ghasna Phool etc. He published his poetry collections such as Chees, Utsedh, Io etc.

His travelogues include - Himalayna Khole and Nava Desh, Nava Vesh, and biographical works are Chandanna Vriksh and Ka Katha. Purakalpan, Irony, Seema Parno Shabda, Spand, Charvana, Dayaram, Pratyagra, Navalkatha Swarup, Pashchat, Vipula Cha Prithvi, Kavyasang etc are his works on literary criticism. He also translated numerous works to Gujarati language. Apart from Padma Shri, Premanand Suvarna Chandrak, Kumar Suvarna Chandrak and Dhanji Kanji Gandhi Suvarna Chandrak are among the major awards received by him.
