Prathap K. Pothan Biography

Prathap. K. Pothan is a director, writer, producer and actor of south Indian cinema. He has acted and directed all south Indian languages except Kannada. He has acted in Hindi movies as well. He appeared most in art movies in Malayalam and won many awards as well. He won Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Malayalam for his memorable performance in art movies, Thakara (1979) and Chamaram (1980). He took a break from Malayalam industry and later concentrated on Tamil and Telugu movies. He returned back to Malayalam movies with 22 Female Kottayam released in 2012 after a long break. His role as the villain brought him back to limelight and he is now concentrated to Malayalam cinema once again.

 

Prathap was born in a rich family in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. He studied in boarding school, Lawrence School, Lovedale, Ooty. He was interested in painting that time. His father was a businessman who owned big shops in the heart of the city. His elder brother, Hari Pothan, a film producer had a brief married life with famous actress Jayabharathi. But after the death of his father at the age 15, the family lost everything and they came to the midst of poverty in a fraction of seconds. The sudden transfer from rich to poor affected the family a lot. His father Kolathinkal Pothan used to travel only in the latest Benz car in the 1950s and 60's. Pratap gained admission to Madras Christian College, Madras. His friends helped him act in plays at college. He left MCC with a B.A in economics in 1972.

 

Malayalam director Bharathan spotted Pothan's performance in Shaw's play Androcles and the Lion. He offered him a role in Malayalam movie, Aaravam. Thus started his film career. He has directed three movies in Malayalam – Daisy (A teenage love story shot at the school he studied), Rithubetham and Yathramozhi. Rithubhetham won him Filmfare Award for Best Director – Malayalam. He was married to Raadhika Sarathkumar, but divorced.
