Prasanna Kumar Tagore Biography

Prasanna Kumar Tagore, also referred to as Prasanna Coomar Tagore was one of the early members of the intellectual Tagore family of Bengal. He belonged to the Pathuriaghata branch of the Tagore family. He was the son of Gopi Mohan Tagore, an educationalist who was one of the founding members of Hindu College. Along with Dwarkanath Tagore, he set up Landholders' Society and British Indian Association, and later became its President. His name is also spelt as Prosunno Kumar Tagore and Prasanna Kumar Tagore.

He was born in Kolkata on 21 December 1801. He received his primary education at home and completed his school studies at Sherborne's school. After his father Gopi Mohan Tagore established Hindi College, one of the oldest colleges of Kolkata, Prasanna completed his graduation from the same college. He had the knowledge of both traditional smriti and western law and after his graduation he started practising law at a civil court of Kolkata. Though he was later appointed as government lawyer, he left the job after a few years to look after the family property. He was one of the respected Bengali rich people at that time.

He later worked as clerk-assistant in Viceroy’s Council, and was founder-secretary of the conservative Gaudiya Samaj. He supported Raja Ram Mohan Roy’s campaign to abolish Sati. He also served as a trustee of Brahmo Samaj. He was an influential rich person of his time who was also involved with many social activities as a part of Bengal renaissance in the 19th century. He believed in the principle of education and also stood against social evils like Sati. He also opposed the activities of Christian missionaries during his life time.

After his life time, many of his family members became very famous in the field of art, literature and education. His son Gnanendramohan Tagore was the first Asian to be called to the bar in England, in 1862. Gnanendramohan was married to the daughter of Krishna Mohan Banerjee, one of great thinkers of 19th century.
