Pramod Chakravorty Biography

Pramod Chakravorty was a Bollywood filmmaker in the 1960s known for the movies – Ziddi, Love in Tokyo and Phir wohi dil laaya hoon, starring Asha Parekh and Joy Mukherjee in the lead roles. All these three movies were musical hits and known for the sizzling chemistry of the lead actors. Nastik and Barood (1976) are other big hits of Pramod. In 1998 he directed his last movie with Akshay Kumar titled Barood, which was a box office failure. In fact, Akshay Kumar’s first movie Deedar was signed by Pramod, though his first release was Saugandh. He directed Hema Malini-Dharmendra starrer Dream girl in 1977. Though the movie was a box office flop, the ‘Dream girl’ tag got permanently added to Hema Malini’s name.  

Pramod Chakravorty, known by the nick name Chakki was born on 15 August 1929 in Bengal. Soon after Indian independence it was not an easy task to gain success in film industry. He started his film career as an assistant under Raj khosle and worked for the movies like Milap and CID. He spent three years under Khosle. He got married to Guru Dutt’s sister in law. He made his first independent film “12 o’clock” in 1958 – a murder mystery. In five years, he delivered three flops and two movies got shelved. He even sold off his wife’s ornaments and later sought the help of a powerful screenwriter.

He got associated with script writer Sachin Bhowmick of Aradhana fame for many movies and tasted success for the first time. Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hun in 1963 became a major success. The movie starred the hit romantic pair – Joy Mukherjee and Asha Bhosle and he directed two more movies with the same pair – Love in Tokyo and Ziddi. Tumse Achha Kaun Hai, Passport, Jugnu, Azad and Sanjog are other notable works. He also produced a few movies and has been one of the top directors of 1960s.
