Pramathalal Sen Biography

Pramathalal Sen was a philosopher of Keshub Chunder Sen’s New Dispensation from Bengal. He was the nephew of Keshub Chunder Sen and son of Nabinchandra Sen, one of the prominent Bengal literals before Tagore era. Benoyendranath Sen and Mohit Chandra Sen are the rest two Brahmo Samaj activists associated with him. He worked for the benefit of the organization and also strived to improve relations with other Brahmo groups.

 

He was born in Kolkata, West Bengal in 1866. He schooled at Albert School, Kolkata and discontinued his studies to work for Brahmo Samaj, organized by his uncle. After his uncle’s death, he worked with Sadhu Hiranand Advani in Hyderabad. He returned to Kolkata after the death of Advani, stopping all the works. Later he was associated with Protap Chunder Mozoomdar, a close follower of Keshub Chandra Sen and Brahmo Samaj leader. He studied Theology from Manchester College in England, one of the earliest members of Brahmo Samaj to go abroad for studies. Later he became a missionary of the Brahmo Samaj.

 

Sen also had a literal career at a young age. He was closely associated with Tagore and Brahmabandhab Upadhyay from a young age. He published Tagore’s English translation poems in England, the first writer to do so.  He also served as an editor for a few literal magazines. He also served as the secretary of the Victoria Institution at Kolkata for 15 long years. He was unmarried and lived a simple life. ‘Naludar Chithi’ is a 4 volume complied work of his letters. Keshub Chunder Sen – a Study is a biographical work of Sen.
