Pramatha Nath Bose Biography

Pramatha Nath Bose, shortly called P. N. Bose was an eminent Indian geologist and paleontologist. He was one of the early Indians to join the Geological Survey of India as a graded officer. It was P.N.Bose who first discovered iron ore deposits in Madhya Pradesh state which later led to the establishment of India’s biggest industrialist company - Tata Iron and Steel Company at Sakchi. In 2005, 150th birth anniversary of the geologist was celebrated in a grand way. Noted film director Madhu Bose was his son, who later married actress Sadhana Bose, granddaughter of Brahmo Samaj member Keshab Chandra Sen. Filmmaker Amit Bose is his grandson. Bose was a friend of Rabindranath Tagore.

Pramatha Nath Bose was born on May 12, 1855 in Gaipur, a village in 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. PN Bose completed graduation from London University in 1877 – the first Indian to earn this credit from a British University and one year later, he passed out from the Royal School of Mines. Later he reached India where he started his career as a geologist. He was associated with Geological Survey of India during the period for a long time, though he was forced to retire from services in 1903 following discriminatory policies of the British Government. He discovered iron ore mines in Dhulli and Rajhara in Madhya Pradesh, followed by iron ore deposits in the hills of Gorumahisani in Mayurbhanj which is regarded as the outstanding contribution of this geologist. Following this discovery, he wrote a letter to J N Tata on February 24, 1904 and the rest is history! India’s biggest company then - Tata Iron and Steel Company was established by J N Tata in Madhya Pradesh very soon after this discovery, which paved way to great industrial development in India.

Apart from the discovery of iron ores in Madhya Pradesh, he discovered petroleum in Assam and also introduced micro sections as an aid to petroleum works. He was the first one to set up a soap factory in India. He was instrumental in starting Jadavpur University, then known by the name Bengal Technical Institute. He also served as its first principal. He passed away in 1934.
