Prakash Pant Biography

Prakash Pant is an Indian politician belonging to Bharatiya Janata Party. He is also pharmacist by profession, who worked in government sector. He currently serves as Finance Minister of Government of Uttarakhand, who assumed office in March 2017. He was the first speaker of Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly, and as a cabinet minister he has earlier held portfolios such as Tourism, Culture, Pilgrimage Endowment, Parliamentary Affairs & Reorganization. He has lost 2012 state assembly elections to a Congress candidate, earlier. Apart from his political career, he is an ace shooter, and has won a gold medal in state shooting championship, and a silver medal in national level championship.

Prakash Pant was born on 11 November 1960 in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. He was born into a middle class family as the son of Mohan Chandra Pant. He graduated in Pharmacy from Dwarahat in 1980 and later got married. His wife works in a school as an office staff. Since young he showed leadership qualities. He worked in government sector and has been associated with selfless social service since then. He strived for the uplift of underprivileged people of the society. He is a shooter also, who has won many medals in the state and national level, before he turned fully active in politics.

Pant’s active political career began in the mid-1970s during his academic years, when he became General Secretary of Military Science Board in 1977. Later he became member of Municipal Council of Pithoragarh, member of Legislative Council U.P and held many other posts too. After the formation of Uttarakhand state, he got fully active in state level politics. He became the youngest speaker of such a body among the commonwealth nations, when he was elected to the position in year 2000.
