Pradip Mukherjee (artist) Biography

Pradip Mukherjee is an Indian artist from Jaipur, Rajasthan. He was raised in a Jain family in Kolkata, where he grew up and completed his education. As an artist he is best known for phad painting, a form of popular folk painting of Rajasthan. It is a style religious scroll painting and folk painting. He worked on variety of themes and subjects, mostly surrounding folk stories and Hindu mythology. He chooses subjects from ancient and classical books such as Ramcharitramanas, Geet Govind, Durga Saptshahti, Bhagvad Gita, and Hanuman Chalisa, and also great works of Kalidasa. He has also painted modern subjects like Agyeya’s Sagaramudra.

 

He was born on 22 August 1953 in Jaipur, Rajasthan. He belongs to the famous Mukherjee family of Jaipur. His parents were government employees. The family practised Jainism. During his childhood days the family relocated to Kolkata and got settled. Thus Pradip grew up in Kolkata. Yet his early childhood life in Jaipur left some unforgettable marks in the mind of young Pradip, which he later expressed in the form of paintings.

 

He was interested in sketching and painting since childhood, and he started wall painting during his early teens. When he reached 16, he moved back to Jaipur. He was introduced to Phad painting when his mother presented him an art piece after she returned from a tour. To pursue a career in arts, he studied at Rajasthan School of Arts, Jaipur. His parents were unhappy and didn’t support him financially. Over the years he made a mark of himself in Phad paintings. In 1974, he made a Phad painting depicting the situation before and after the Emergency, and it was gifted to Indira Gandhi by Hari Dev Joshi. After that he came to limelight.

 

He created a series of 108 Phad paintings on Ramcharitmanas in the early 1980s. His paintings on Durga saptashati are displayed at City Palace, Udaipur, VIP lounge at IGI Airport etc. Pradip received Shilp Guru award in 2008, when the award was commenced. The award is conferred annually to the master craftspersons in innovating different styles and designs of the traditional craftsmanship, and is given by government of India. Every year 10 artists are honoured.
