Pracheta Gupta Biography

Pracheta Gupta is a leading Bengali writer and journalist. In 2007, his work Chander Bari was made a feature film by leading film director Tarun Majumdar. Necklace (2011) made by film maker Sekhar das was based on Gupta's story Chor-er bou. A few of his stories have been translated into Hindi, Oriya and Marathi language. He writes for the magazine, Unish-Kuri.

 

He was born on 14 October 1962 in Kolkata to Kshetra Gupta and Jyotsna Gupta. Gupta spent his childhood in Bangur Avenue and studied in Bangur Boys School. At a younger age, he started writing. At the age of 12, his first story was published in Anandamela. He graduated from Scottish Church College, Kolkata. His first novel Aamar ja achhe was published in 2004 in Anandalok magazine. Same year he published his first children's novel Laal rong-er churi was published in Anandamela, the magazine in which he published for the first time.

 

His important works include - Nil Alor phul , Kothao Noy , Aamar Ja Achhe, Aschorjo Pukur, Kanchangorer Kokil Sir, Jabajjiban, Deri Hoye Gechhe, Teen Number Chithi, Jadabbabu Mithya Bolen Na, Shit Khub Dure Noy and Pracheta Guptar Galpo. His theatre based works include - Baba Ashben, Kokil Sir, Dure Baje, Bibaha Barshiki and Lokta. He has written those plays for Uhini Kolkata, Shipi Sangha and Abhash theatre groups.

 

He has received numerous awards throughout his career. A few of them are Bangla Academy's Sutapa Roychowdhury Smarak Puraskar (2007), Shailajananda Smarak Samman (2009), Sera Sahityik Puraskar by Akash Bangla (2009), Ashapurna Devi Birth Centinary Literature Award (2009), Gajendra Kumar Mitra O Sumathanath Ghosh Smarak Samman (2010), Barna Parichay Sharad Sahitya Samman (2010) and Most Promising Writer Award By Publishers and Bookseller's Guild (Kolkata Book Fair)-2011. He is married to Mitra Gupta and Samudra Gupta is their single child.
