Prabuddha Dasgupta Biography

Prabuddha Dasgupta was a professional photographer from Kolkata, associated with fashion world and fine arts. He was known for his iconic black and white imagery, he was a pioneer of fashion photography who photographed several Indian ads of 1990s. He was primarily a fashion photographer with three decades of experience in the entertainment world. His well-known book - Women (1996) is a collection of portraits and nudes of urban Indian women. Dasgupta worked with the first generation of Indian supermodels like Madhu Sapre, Feroze Gujral, Shyamolie Verma and Mehr Jesia, and is also known for shooting the first set of controversial ads of Kama Sutra condoms in 1991, featuring models Pooja Bedi and Marc Robinson, and also 'Tuff Shoes' in 1995, which featured Milind Soman and Madhu Sapre..

 

Prabuddha Dasgupta was born in Kolkata on 21st September 1956. His father Pradosh Das Gupta was a sculptor and curator of National Gallery of Modern Art Delhi in the 1960s. Prabuddha Dasgupta trained as a historian and started his professional career as copywriter with advertising agency Everest. He turned a full-time photographer in the 1980s. When the first generation of super models came into existence in the 1990s, he became a well-experienced name in this field. It can be said that he invented glamour in India, an era which witnessed a huge transformation in Indian fashion industry.

 

As a commercial photographer, he took off with a campaign for Blue Lagoon Jeans. He shot the first advertisements of KamaSutra condoms in 1991 featuring Pooja Bedi and Marc Robinson, and also 'Tuff Shoes' in 1995, which featured top models, Milind Soman and Madhu Sapre. Both these ad campaigns always top the controversial list of Indian ad industry. Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar and GQ are the leading fashion magazines with which he worked regularly. He spent his last years in Goa.
