Prabha Atre Biography 
Prabha Atre is an Indian classical vocalist who sings Hindustani music. She has also taken formal training in Kathak art form. She holds Doctor of Music for her research on Sargam and Sangeet Alankar (Master of Music) from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal. She received training in North Indian Classical Vocal Music from Sureshbabu Mane and Hirabai Barodekar, the children of Abdul Karim Khan, founder of Kirana gharana. Currently she is one of the senior vocalists in the country representing the Kirana Gharana. She has been greatly influenced by Ustad Amir Khan and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan in singing style.
Prabha was born to Abasaheb and Indirabai Atre in Pune on 13 September 1932. Both she and her sister Usha were interested in music, though they never thought to pursue a career in music. At the age of 8, Prabha fell ill and someone suggested that music can heal her disease. Thus Prabha learnt music. Her music training was in the Guru-shishya tradition with initial training from Vijay Karandikar. Later she had advanced training from Sureshbabu Mane and Hirabai Barodekar, exponents of Kirana singing tradition.
While studying music, she received degrees in academic studies as well. She received Bachelor of Science degree from Fergusson College, University of Pune and Bachelor of Law from Law College, University of Pune. Later she took Master of Music from Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal. Aoart from doctorate in music she has also done Western Music Theory Grade-IV from Trinity College of Music, London. Now she is one of the senior vocalists of Kirana gharana and Khayal, Thumri, Geet, Natyasangeet, Dadra, Ghazal, and bhajans are her musical genres. She has also worked with Marathi Theater for a short time where she was a stage actress. Sanshay-Kallol, Maanaapamaan, Saubhadra and Vidyaharan are a few such plays.
