Poornachandra Tejaswi Biography

Poornachandra Tejaswi was a prominent Kannada writer. He is also known as a photographer, ornithologist, publisher, painter and environmentalist. He is the son of versatile and noted Karnataka writer, "Rashtrakavi" Kuvempu. He gave significant contributions to "Navya" period of Kannada literature and started a new category that came to be known by the name, bandaya. Bandaya means protest literature and his short-story collection Abachoorina Post Offisu initiated bandaya in Kannada literature. In 1987 he received Kendra Sahitya Academy award for his novel, Chidambara Rahasya. He also received Kannada Sahitya Academy award the same year. Pampa Award in 2001 and Rajyotsava Award are other honours received by him. He died on April 5, 2007 aged 68.

 

Tejaswi was born on September 8, 1938 in Kuppali of Karnataka. Tejaswi received Rajyotsava Award for his first short story "Linga Banda". He has always tried to make an image of his own, rather than depending on his father or remain as his shadow. He took graduation from Maharaja College of Mysore. But as he was interested in farming, he bought a coffee estate at Mudigere taluk of Chikmagalur District and got settled there. Painting, photography and philosophy are his other hobbies.

 

Tejaswi wrote his first novel, Kaadu Mattu Kraurya, when he was only 24. As a writer he has experimented with every form of literary works including poems, short stories, novels, travelogues, plays and science fiction. He has also translated many English books to Kannada language. His collection of poems is titled, Bruhannale Somuvina Swagatalahari mattu Itara Kavanagalu. Maayeya Mukhagalu includes his photograph works. Alemariya Andaman mattu Mahanadi Nile belongs to travelogue. He has also written one play, Yamala Prashne. Missing Link, Kannada nadina Hakkigalu, Sahaja Krushi and Aeroplane Chitte Mattu Itara Kathegalu are a few of his science works.
