Poorna Biography

Poorna, known as Shamna Kasim at present is a successful actress of south Indian movies. Most recently, she worked in remake of Chattakari as the lead heroine. Chattakari is old movie Julie, originally made in Malayalam with actress Laxmi and later made to other south Indian languages as well as Hindi. Shamna reprised the role of Christian girl played by Laxmi. Before that she has appeared in numerous bit roles in Malayalam and later she shifted to other regional languages. She is a trained classical dancer also.

Shamna Kasim was born on February 1st, 1989 in Kannur, Kerala. While she was participating at the reality-based dance competition Super Dancer on Amrita TV, she got a bit role in Kamal’s Manju Poloru Penkutty in the year 2004. Later she appeared in another Kamal movie in a small role – Pacha Kuthira released in 2006. In between she appeared in a few more Malayalam movies before she shifted to Tamil and Kannada. Those movies are - Hridayathil Sookshikkan, Ennittum, College Kumaran, Flash, Ali bhai, December and Bhargavacharitham Moonam Khandam. Her first appearance in a non-Malayalam film happened through Telugu movie, Sri Mahalakshmi in the year 2007.

A few of her noted Telugu works till ‘Chattakari’ are Seema Tapakai and Avanu. She concentrated most on Tamil movies during this name, with the name – Poorna. Kandhakottai, Vellore Maavattam, Vithagan, Drogi, Muniyandi Vilangial Moonramandu and Aadu Puli are a few such movies. She got a supporting role in critically well acclaimed Malayalam movie, Makara Manju in the year 2011. Next year she was casted in the movie ‘Chattakari’ which made her an iconic sexy figure of Malayalam. When a trend started in Malayalam movies started to remake old sexy Malayalam movies, Chattakari was one such. She was paired opposite Hemanth Menon in this movie. Though the movie failed at box office, critics appreciated the work of Kasim and later she appeared in Aaru Sundarimaarude Katha, a box office hit. Now she is counted among the leading heroines of the industry.
