Piyush Jha Biography

Piyush Jha is a film director, novelist and screenwriter of Indian origin. He is most known for his acclaimed films Sikandar (2009), King of Bollywood and Chalo America. Also, as an author, his crime-thriller novel, Mumbaistan is a best seller. Piyush Jha was born in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, but moved to Mumbai at the age of 8 where he is still residing. Jha is married to Priyanka Sinha, the editor of film magazine Screen. Piyush Jha's films are noted for the unconventionality of the subject matter and treatment. His movies are plotted in his own individual way, not at all in typical Bollywood style though themes he chooses belong to such categories.

Piyush was brought up in Mumbai. He took graduation in Psychology from University of Mumbai and took MBA from K. J. Somaiya Institute of Management Studies and Research. Jha began his career in 1995 in advertising as an Account Executive at Grey Worldwide. Later he worked with Mudra Communications in strategic account management. Very soon, he got caught up with creativity of ad films and did ad films for Godrej Hair Dye, Federal Bank, Kitply etc. In 1998, he started his own ad film production company Vitamin J Productions. Ads of Indian Oil, Hindustan Lever, Symphony Air Coolers and UB Group were his earliest assignments.

In the year 2000, he debut film making field with Chalo America. This movie was produced by NFDC, Government of India. It told the story of a group of three Indian college boys obsessed with the American dream and different means they try to fulfill. Though the movie was satire, it gives some serious thoughts as well. Again he continued with ad films and returned in 2004 with his second movie, King of Bollywood with veteran actor Om Puri in the lead. His recent release in Sikander in 2009 which accumulated critics’ praises.
