Pithapuram Nageswara Rao Biography

Pithapuram Nageswara Rao was one of the earliest playback singers of Telugu film industry. Rao excelled in singing songs with comic style and most of his songs belonged to the era of 1950s and 1960s. He, along with Madhavapeddi Satyam has contributed many memorable duets to Telugu cinema. Started singing at the age of 16 with the film Mangala Sutram (1946), Bommarillu (1978) was his last film, in which he recorded the song - Challani Ramayya Chakkani Seetamma. Later he took full time retirement from singing industry. He passed away on 5 March 1996 aged 66.

 

Rao was born on May 5, 1930 in Pithapuram village of East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh. Viswanadham and Appayyamma are his parents and his birth name is Patharlagadda Nageswara Rao. His father was a stage actor and young Rao got attracted to theatre at a very young age. During his school days he started his career as an actor as well as singer for local theater. He used to sing in the background for many actors who were less proficient in singing. Later he decided to join film industry and reached Chennai.

 

He marked his career beginning as a playback singer in the year 1946. The movie was Mangala Sutram and he was only 16 then. At the age of 18, he sang for Chandralekha through which he became popular. Since then he became a busy playback singer of Telugu cinema, and he mostly sing for comedy actors. His comedy songs - Ayyayyo Jebulo Dabbulu Poyene for Kula Gothralu, Pelli Chesi Choopisthaam of Pelli Chesi Choodu, Ranante Rane Ranu of Patala Bhairavi, Maa Oollo Oka Paduchundi of Ave Kallu and Ekkadoyi Muddula Bava Chandamama of Panduranga Mahatyam are among his most memorable hits.
