Philip Augustine Biography 
Philip Augustine is an Indian physician from Kerala, best known as a gastroenterologist, specialist in gastrointestinal endoscopy. He started Lakeshore Hospital and Research Centre in 2003, and serves as its administrator now. For his contributions towards Indian medicine, Government of India honoured him with the fourth highest civilian honour - Padma Shri in 2010. He is credited towards establishing gastroenterology department at Devamatha Hospital, Koothattukulam which serves as a referral centre now.
Philip Augustine hails from Kaduthuruthy, Kottayam. After completing his MBBS, he took MD from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, in 1975, with a Gold Medal. He started his medical practice at Koothattukulam, opening a new clinic. Later he specialised in Gastroenterology and also studied ultrasonography and endoscopy with advanced training at US, Germany, France etc. Once he returned back, he joined Devamatha Hospital, Koothattukulam. He also established a speciality gastroenterology department in this hospital which turned a major success. Philip gained recognition by treating patients in this sector, and later his department became a major referral centre in Kerala.
In 1996, along with a group of doctors, he started Lakeshore Hospital and Research Centre, and it was opened to public in 2003. Over the years it has become one of the leading multi-speciality health care centres in Kerala. The hospital is credited to some of the first treatments and operations related to gastroenterology conducted in Kerala. A few of them need special mention - First living donor liver transplant in Kerala, First metal on ceramic knee replacement surgery in Asia, First insulin pump insertion surgery in South India, First wireless capsule endoscopy in Kerala etc. He is currently settled in Palarivattom, Kochi with his wife and two children.
