Pavithran (tamil Film Director) Biography

Pavithran is a Tamil film director, known for his long term association with actor Sarathkumar. He has directed numerous roles with actor Sarathkumar handling the pivot roles. Vasanthakala Paravai (1991) marked his directorial debut. Suriyan in 1992 marked his successful beginning with actor Sarath Kumar and later they together worked for the projects - I Love India (1993), Indhu (1994) etc. Thiru moorthi, Mattuthavani, Kadhal Palli and Kalloori Vaasal are his other releases. Bollywood actress Pooja Bhatt played the lead role in his campus oriented movie - Kalloori Vaasal in 1996, though it was not received well at box office. He has been one of the popular directors of Tamil in the 1990s. Indu and Sooriyan went on to collect huge revenue at the box-office.

Pavithran started his film career as an independent director in the early 1990s. His debut venture Vasanthakala Paravai, released in 1991 was financed by K. T. Kunjumon, the producer known for big budget movies. Sooriyan in 1992 with Sarath Kumar, Roja and Goundamani in the pivot roles was his real breakthrough. The action thriller went on to become one of the biggest hits of the year, cementing his position in Kollywood. The movie was inspired from 1985 Hollywood thriller Commando and it was dubbed to Telugu as Mande Suryudu.

Music director Deva is associated with most of Pavithran’s movies like Suriyan, Kallori Vasal, Mattuthavani, Indhu etc.  For his movie ‘I Love India’ music was scored by Ilaiyaraaja. He also financed the movie Selva in 1996. Later many of his movies became delayed and shelved and he made a comeback with the movie – Mattuthavani in 2012. The movie was originally started in 2007 and got released only after 5 years.
