Pauly Valsan Biography

Pauly Valsan is a popular character artist associated with Malayalam cinema. Most recently she came to spotlight after winning Kerala state award for best supporting actress for the memorable movie she played in the movie, Ee Ma Yau released in 2018. Her role in Ottamuri Velicham was also critically acclaimed. Pauly has been associated with mainstream commercial cinema as well, though she played some character roles. She was seen in Malayalam films - Annan Thambi, Iyobinte Pusthakam, Amar Akbar Antony, Novu, Vanyam and Guppy. She belongs to Vypeen in Kochi, is also a fishing village, and she portrayed a similar role for her state award winning film.

 

Pauly Valsan hails from Kochi of Ernakulam district. Ambulance scene in Annan Thampi, Hospital scene in Beautiful etc are some of her early noted roles. A single scene with just one or two dialogues; yet Pauly registered those scenes for herself with her signature style. She has a lot of experience in theater and has shared stage space with legendary artists like Thilakan and P. J. Antony. She started appearing on stage at a younger age, but couldn’t get support from her family later. She belonged to a big fisherman family of 7 children, and she was eldest of all. 5 of them were girls. But later she got permission to work in theatre, and has completed 37 years as of now.

 

She loves to play comedy on stage most. Though she has been active in theatre since mid-1970s, it took a long time for her film debut. In fact she was reluctant to work in movies, and wanted to concentrate on to her theatre career. She marked her film debut with Mammootty starrer Annan Thampi, and as of now has played a few memorable roles on screen as well. She has shared stage space with actor Mammootty for one play in the year 1975, titled Sabarmati.
