Partho Sen Gupta Biography

Partho Sen Gupta is an Indian film director and screenwriter who works in parallel cinema. He has also worked as art director or production designer during many of Bollywood movies during 1980’s. He has also set up design studio working on numerous advertising films and art movies. As a film maker, his movies have been shown at many international film festivals and won numerous awards in different categories as well. A few of his noted movies include – The way of beauty, Le Cochon, Trajet Discontinu, Hava Aney Dey, La Partition and La Petite Souris.

His films have always selected for numerous film festivals and won different awards also. Hava Aney Dey won Best Film Award (Durban International Film Festival), BBC Audience Award (Commonwealth Film Festival) and Special Jury Mention (Hong Kong International Film Festival). Trajet Discontinu won Special Jury Award - Cerruti Foundation and 'Young Actors Jury Award for Best Short Film' (European Film Festival of Angers, France).

Gupta was born on 2 September 1965 in Mumbai. He started his career in Bollywood as an assistant art director since 17. Saagar and Mr.India are a few of such films. In 1988, he became the art director of Sudhir Mishra's Mein Zinda hoon for which he won best art director award. He also worked as production designer on the French film ‘Nocturne Indien’ shot at Mumbai. In 1993, he was selected to do a two-month summer workshop at FEMIS where he shot his first short film, "La Derniere..." and he got a scholarship for three and half years to study film direction at the same school.

Hava Aney Dey marked his directorial debut, the project which he wrote screenplay also. It was premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in 2004 and became a part of the Global Lens 2008 series. He was invited by the Cannes Film Festival in 2005 and now he is busy with his project as a director, Fallen Hero which will be shot in Rajasthan.
