Partap Sharma Biography

Partap Sharma was a writer, playwright and documentary film maker. His children’s books are very popular.The Surangini Tales (1973) is one such. He was also known as a commentator and actor. Dog Detective Ranjha (1978) is a story book dedicated to animal lovers all over the world. The Little Master of the Elephant (1984) and Top Dog (1985) are other popular children’s books. Days of the Turban (1986), A Touch of Brightness" (1964), Sammy!, Begum Sumrooand Zen Katha of Bodhidharma (historical play) are other noted works of Sharma. He has also authored several playwrights and directed many movies and documentary films. Bollywood actress Tara Sharma is his daughter.

 

Sharma was born in Lahore, Punjab of present Pakistan on 12 December 1939. He was born as the elder son to a civil engineer Dr. Baij Nath Sharma and Dayawati Sharma. His father has worked as Technical Advisor to governments in Sri Lanka, Tanganyika and Libya. After retirement he settled with farming in his ancestral property. Village described in Partap’s novel, Days of the Turban is inspired from this place. Sharma studied at Trinity College, Kandy, and Bishop Cotton School, Shimla before getting a triple promotion. He joined St. Xavier's College, Mumbai when he was only 14, when the age needed to study there was 16. Later he married Susan Amanda Pick and had two daughters. Noted film actress and model Tara Sharma is their daughter.

 

His long term association with the Indian National Theatre, Mumbai, began in 1961. His first full-length play “Bars Invisible” was produced under this banner. A few of his noted plays  include - Brothers Under The Skin, A Touch Of Brightness, Begum Sumroo, Samy!, Power play and The Professor Has A Warcry. Apart from directing a few documentary and feature films, he has also played lead role in Hindi movies like Tyaag Patra, Nehru – The Jewel of India and Pehla kadam.
