Pargat Singh Biography

Pargat Singh is a legendary hockey player and Former Indian captain from Mithapur of Jalandhar, Punjab who is active in politics right now. Singh is regarded as ‘Kapil Dev of Indian Hockey team’. As a politician he belongs to ruling Shiromani Akali Dal. Regarded as one of the world's best defenders, he served as the Captain of team India at 1992 Barcelona Olympics and 1996 Atlanta Olympics. After retirement from sports, he served Punjab police before he entered politics. For his outstanding contributions to Indian hockey, he was awarded the highest recognition of Indian sports – Arjuna awards in 1989, followed by Padma Shri in 1989.

 

He was born on 5 March 1965 in Jalandhar, Punjab. He belongs to Mithapur. His early education was done at his native village. Later he studied at Lyallpur Khalsa College. During his teens, he became a member of junior Indian hockey team. Later he graduated into the senior hockey team, followed by national level team. He represented India for the first time at 10-nation hockey tournament held at Hong Kong. Though he found space in the team as a defender, he was entirely different from normal defenders. He was lean, slim and had average height only.

 

As a player he has been an inspiration to many players later and introduced many new techniques as well. He also owned an antagonist, and aggressive attacking style. Singh has been India's a central cohesive source of support and stability till his retirement. Though a great player, he sticks on to his principle of remaining 'down to earth'. He currently serves as the Vice-President of the Surjit Singh Memorial Hockey Tournament Society of Jalandhar.
