Paresh Maity Biography

Paresh Maity is an Indian Painter Sculptor Photographer and Filmmaker from West Bengal. He was honoured with Padma Shri by government of India in 2014 for his overall contributions to the field of arts. Within a short career span, he went on to become one of the prolific painters of the country. He is married to artist Jayasri Burman and the couple is settled in Delhi. Till now he has conducted 79 Solo Exhibitions worldwide, the first one in the year 1986. He painted the longest painting in India that stretches up to over 850 feet.

 

Delhi-based artist Paresh Maity was born in 1965 in Tamluk, Purba Medinipur, West Bengal. He completed his bachelor of arts from Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata and Master’s from Delhi College of Arts in the 1980s. In the career spanning to more than three decades, he gained a name of his own, and till now has conducted 79 Solo Exhibitions – in India and abroad. His journey from Tamluk in Midnapore to the Marina Bay Sands Exhibition & Tate Britain, to shows in New York, Tokyo & Istanbul, with many honours earned over the years, it was full of hard work and very enriching.

 

His creative process leans towards aesthetics, harmony, ceremony, and relationships. His early works were on rural themes of Bengal, his own state, and he was influenced by elements like nature and music. He used water colours of different locations for his paintings. From nature, he slowly moved to representation of humans. He likes viewing and working with huge canvases and his imaginations too, never own any limits. The artist states that every single stroke is a sum of his entire life’s journey, and hence it may take 40-50 years to complete a piece of work, logically!
