Paranjoy Guha Thakurta Biography

Paranjoy Guha Thakurta is an Indian journalist, writer, political commentator, and also a documentary film maker. He was one among those who joined public interest litigation in the 2G spectrum case. He formerly served as Editor of the Economic and Political Weekly (EPW). His article about the Adani Group's tax evasion reached a lot of media hype then. He is also a TV host, who successfully hosted the talk show, India Talks on CNBC-India which ran over 1400 episodes. The show earned him a lot of popularity among TV viewing audiences.

 

Paranjoy Guha Thakurta was born on 5 October 1955 in Delhi. He studied at La Martiniere Calcutta, followed by St. Stephen's College and Delhi School of Economics, where he completed his studies in economics in the late 1970s. He wanted to become a teacher. But after Emergency period, he changed his decision and pursued a career in journalism. Since then he has associated with some of the leading magazines and dailies such as Business India, Businessworld, The Telegraph, India Today and The Pioneer, in the past 30 years and has earned a name of his own.

 

He joined documentary film making in 2013. Coal Curse was his first documentary, based on the wrongs in the Indian coal mining industry. In 2014, he published the book, Gas Wars: Crony Capitalism and the Ambanis. The book was co-authored with Subir Ghosh and Jyotirmoy Chaudhuri. In 2016, he joined EPW as Editor and published an article on how Adani Group was benefited by the government policies. A defamation notice was issued against him, and he resigned as the Editor of EPW. Most recently he has written extensively on the issue of "paid news".
