Pandurang Madkaikar Biography

Pandurang Madkaikar is an Indian politician and legislator from Goa. He is member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, and currently serves as an MLA from the Cumbarjua constituency in North Goa. He has formerly served as a cabinet minister in state governments led by both INC and BJP. He was inducted into the cabinet of Digambar Kamat Ministry on 25 June 2007 and given the portfolios of Transport and Social Welfare. He also served as the Minister for Power, Social Welfare and Non-Conventional Energy in Manohar Parrikar’s ministry from 14 March 2017 to 24 September 2018. His wife Janita is the Sarpanch of the Old Goa Village Panchayat. In June 2018, Madkaikar suffered a brain stroke in Mumbai and after a surgery he is slowly recovering.

 

Pandurang Madkaikar was born on 10 September 1964 in Goa. He lives in Tiswadi Taluka, Old Goa. He got into active politics in the early 2000s. He became a legislator for the first time when he won 2002 state assembly elections from the Cumbarjua constituency representing Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party. He was also inducted to the cabinet in the coalition government headed by Manohar Parrikar, and given the portfolio – Transport. He joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2003, and was reallocated the portfolios - Revenue and Printing & Stationery.

 

He again quit the party to join INC in 2005, and resigned as MLA as well. It resulted in the collapse of the Manohar Parrikar’s coalition Ministry. Same year he won a by-election from Cumbarjua constituency as a candidate of the Indian National Congress. He was also given the portfolios - Transport, River Navigation and Sports & Youth Affairs. He retained the seat as INC candidate in 2007 elections too. He also served as the minister of Transport and Social Welfare. In 2012 he retained the seat, and in December 2016, he resigned as a MLA to join the Bharatiya Janata Party. In the past two decades of his political career almost, he has switched between different party affiliations.
