Panchu Arunachalam Biography

Panchu Arunachalam was a well-known screenwriter, director, producer and lyricist, best known for his association with Tamil cinema. As a lyricist he started his career in 1963, and later wrote film scripts since 1970s. His early association with Kannadasan has delivered movies like Thiruneelakandar (1972) before he started his independent career. He started producing movies since 1977 and has directed four movies since late 1980s. He passed away in 2016 aged 75. His son Subbu Panchu is a noted actor and film producer. Panchu is also known for introducing the legendary musician Illayaraja to Tamil cinema scene, through 1976 film, Annakili. He has written stories for 45 films and screenplay and dialogues for over 100 films.

 

Panchu Arunachalam was born on 18 June 1941 in Sirukoodalpatti of Karaikudi, Sivaganga district, Tamil Nadu. The great poet Kannadasan is his uncle, who introduced him to the world of cinema. He was also his mentor. They jointly worked in many movies, and wrote film scripts together during Panchu’s early days in cinema. He also assisted his uncle in writing lyrics during his early days. Started a low profile career in films in early 1960s, he went on to become one of the leading screenwriters and lyricists of Tamil film industry. Pokkiri Raja, Dharmadurai, Aboorva Sagodharargal, Singaravelan, Veera,  Manithan, Murattu Kaalai, Sakalakala Vallavan, Thambikku Endha Ooru, Guru Sishyan, Kalyana Raman, Priya, Bhuvana Oru Kelvikuri, Rajathi Raja, Aarilirundhu Aruvadhuvarai etc are his best screenplay works.

 

As a screenwriter he has scripted more than 100 films, which is indeed a big achievement. He has also written song lyrics for more than 300 songs for 200 films. He started a production banner P. A. Arts in the 1970s, and produced more than a dozen films. He also directed the films - Manamagale Vaa (1988), Puthu Paatu (1990), Thambi Pondatti (1992) and Kalikalam (1992). He is known for giving a large number of hit films with a variety of subjects, and has given many memorable movies to Rajinikanth and Kamal Hassan, who turned big stars later. He has written stories for 23 films of Rajinikanth and 13 for Kamal Haasan.
