Padma Subramanyam Biography

Padma Subramanyam is an Indian classical dancer who excels in Bharatanatyam dance. She is also a music composer, choreographer and researcher. She has given many performances in India and abroad. She enthralls her audience by her body movements and hand gesticulations.

She was born on 4th February 1943 in Chennai in India. Her parents are K. Subramaniam and Meenakshi. Her father was a film producer and her mother was a lyricist and musician. Her father established a dancing school called Nrutyodaya in 1942 and it was where she got her dance training. She got her bachelors’ degree in music and masters’ degree in Ethno-Musicology. She also has obtained Ph. D in dancing.

Her gurus in dancing are Kausalya and Guru Vazhuvoor Ramaiah Pillai. She is highly interested in researching the Indian dance forms and poses. She insisted that the various Karanas of Lord Nataraja were originally performed by the Goddess Parvati.

Her dance recital is known as Pushpanjali. She adapts Sukha Lasya technique in her dancing. She gave her debut stage performance in 1956 when she was 13 years old. During her young age she served as a choreographer for the dance drama Meenakshi Kalyanam. She enacted the dance drama Nagarukku Appal n 1963.

 She has visited many countries including USA, Canada, UK, France, Austria, Russia, Poland, Nepal, Australian, Bahrain, Kuwait, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Qatar, Japan, etc.

She has received Padma Shri award in 1981, Padma Bhushan award in 1983 and in 2003, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1983, Kalaimamani Award from the Government of Tamil Nadu, Nehru Award from Soviet Union in 1983, Bharata Sastra Rakshamani award, Nada Brahmam award from Narada Gana Sabha organization, Kalidas Samman title from Madhya Pradesh and Fukuoka Asian Cultural Prize from an organization in Japan.
