Pablo Bartholomew Biography

Pablo Bartholomew, son of famous art critic Richard Bartholomew, is an Indian photojournalist and professional photographer based in Delhi. He shot to fame after his iconic picture of a half-buried child victim of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy became famous across the globe and also earned him World Press Photo of the Year award in 1984. He received the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2014. For his contributions towards the field of Indian photography, he was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2013. He also worked as a still photographer in film sets, most notable ones being Satyajit Ray's Shatranj ke Khilari (1977) and Richard Attenborough's Gandhi (1982). Pablo exhibits his photographs in solo exhibitions since 1980.

 

Pablo Bartholomew was born on 18 December 1955 in New Delhi. He was born as the eldest child of Richard Bartholomew, an Indian art critic, photographer, painter, poet, and writer. He was a refugee from Burma who settled in Delhi. His mother, Rati Batra was also a Partition refugee, a theatre activist and one of the founding members of the theatre group, Yatrik. Pablo’s younger days were spent at Delhi, where his father worked as a teacher. While studying in class 9, he discontinued his studies and took a camera in hand.

 

During his early days, he photographed his family and close friends circle. He also took snaps of cities, people and their way of living. In the 1970s he had a stint with theatre. To finance his photo documentary projects, he worked in movies and ad world as a still photographer. He worked as a photojournalist with French-American news photo agency, Gamma Liaison during 1984-2000. His photographs got published in different forms of publications across the world. Bhopal Gas Tragedy, the funeral of Indira Gandhi and Mother Teresa, cyclones in Bangladesh, demolition of the Babri Masjid etc.

 

He regularly conducts photography workshops and serves as the manager of MediaWeb, a software company specialising in photo database solutions, and archiving the digital version of photographs in a server.
