Paban Singh Ghatowar Biography

Paban Singh Ghatowar is an Indian politician from Assam belonging to Indian National Congress. A former parliamentarian and cabinet minister, he served as Union Minister of State (Independent charge) of Development of North Eastern Region and Parliamentary Affairs in Manmohan Singh’s cabinet during 2009-2014. He also formerly served as cabinet minister in Narasimha Rao’s cabinet too. His wife Jibontara Ghatowar is also associated with politics. She currently serves as Parliamentary secretary and Member of the Legislative Assembly in Assam. Paban Singh Ghatowar is a prominent congress leader from Assam and a 5-term MP. He has been elected to Lok Sabha successively in the 10th, 11th, 12th, 13thand 15th assembly elections.

 

Paban Singh Ghatowar was born in Sivasagar, Assam. He was born on 6 December 1950. He is married to Jibontara Ghatowar – a three-time legislature, and the couple has two children. He completed his education from Guwahati. Became a prominent leader in the 1990s, he got elected to assembly in 1991. Since 1991, he has successfully contested Lok Sabha elections six times as a congress candidate. He is a 5-time MP from Dibrugarh constituency. But he was defeated by Sarbananda Sonowal in the same constituency in 14th assembly elections.

 

When he was elected to parliament for the first time, he was induced to Narasimha Rao’s cabinet. He served as Union Deputy Minister, Labour in 1991-93, followed by Union Deputy Minister, Health and Family Welfare in 1993-95 and Union Minister of State, Health and Family Welfare. He was a member of Manmohan Singh’s cabinet during 2009-2014.

 

His name is also not free of controversies. His name was included in the list of Indian Swiss bank account holders when Wikileaks disclosed the names of a few in 2011. But Ghatowar denied the allegation. He was made the chief whip after 2009 Lok Sabha elections. Paban doesn’t own a glorious career in state politics. His only attempt in assembly politics happened in 1985. He contested from the Tingkhong assembly seat of Dibrugarh district and lost to Atul Chandra Koch, an independent candidate by 5,155 votes.
