Paban Das Baul Biography

Paban Das Baul is a well-known Bengali baul singer and musician. He also plays a dubki, a small tambourine and also an ektara – a single string musical instrument. Known as a pioneer of traditional Baul music, Paban is known for promoting this spiritual art form in other parts of the world, and he has also collaborated with many artists for folk-fusion music. He has performed at the Jaipur Literature Festival and also "Nine Lives" Concert, 2009 in London. Baul has also recorded and released a few albums since 1990s.

 

Paban Das Baul was born in 1961 in Mohammedpur village, Murshidabad district of West Bengal. He was born into a family of musicians, traditionally linked to Baul. His father was a baul artist who inspired him right from the childhood. His sister and mother also loved to sing. Paban also got inspired from wandering baul artists of Bengal. His father was a skilled wrestler. But after losing his property, he used to travel through Murshidabad, singing Baul songs and wrestling to meet the financial needs of the family.

 

His career as a baul artist well groomed in the 1980s. He collaborated with Sam Mills, a London-born guitarist in 1988 and started experimenting with fusion music. They released their first album Real Sugar in 1997. It was for the first time when Western pop -Bengali fusion music was born. He collaborated with Susheela Raman later.

 

Inner Knowledge (1997), State of Bengal vs. Paban Das Baul (2004), Tana Tani (2004) and Paban Das Baul - Music of the Honey Gatherers are his album works later. He met his future wife Mimlu for the first time in Paris in the year 1982. Later they got married and the couple lived in Paris for many years. Known as a pioneer of blazing a trail for Baul music on the international music scene, he founded a unique and innovative genre of folk-fusion music.
