P. Surendran Biography

P. Surendran is an Indian writer who writes in Malayalam. He is also known as a columnist, art critic and a philanthropist. A prominent Malayalam writer of present times, he has won the prestigious Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award twice in 2003 and 2013. His work Gramapathakal won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Travelogue in 2013, while his collection of short stories, Jalasandhi won the Kerala Lalitakala Akademi Award and Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Story in 2003. V. P. Sivakumar Award, SBT award, Abu Dhabi Sakti award, Odakkuzhal award and Padmarajan Award are the other major honours received during his literary journey till now.

Surendran hails from Pappinippara of Manjeri, Malappuram district. He was born in the year 1961 as the son of Kumaran Nair and Sarojini Amma. He has three siblings. His family later shifted to Vattamkulam near Edappal, where he completed his schooling. After studies, he started his professional career as a school teacher and currently he is working in Kumaranellur School, Palakkad district. Along with his teaching profession, he continues with his literary works and journalist career, and has given immense contributions to Malayalam literature in the recent times.

He also earned name as an art critic. His book on Indian painter A. Ramachandran won the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi's award for the best book on art criticism. His latest novel, Greeshma Mapini, roughly based on the life of prominent communist figure, V. S. Achuthanandan. Currently he is fully active in his writing career. His recent book named Velichathinte Paryayangal was based on the life of Yusuf Arakkal, Malayali painter. His first collection of stories, Piriyan Govani, was published in 1986, and after that he has published more than 30 books.
