P. S. Sivaswami Iyer Biography

P. S. Sivaswami Iyer was a prominent lawyer, administrator and statesman from Tanjore, Madras Presidency who lived during the period, 1864-1946. He served as the Advocate General of Madras from 1907 to 1911. Iyer was also active in the Indian independence movement and presented India's case before the League of Nations. He also authored a few books on law – Martial law administration in the Panjab as described by the official witnesses, The Simon Commission Report Examines, Evolution of Hindu Moral Ideas and many more.

 

He was born in the village of Palamaneri on 7 February 1864. He schooled at S. P. G. High School, Thanjavur where he was a classmate of V. Krishnaswamy Iyer, a prominent lawyer and educationalist. He graduated from Presidency College, Chennai and completed LLB from Madras Law College. He started practising in the year 1885. In the next 10 years, he earned good name as a successful lawyer. He was nominated to the Governor's Executive Council in 1904. He served as a member of the Madras Legislative Council during 1904-1907 and as Advocate-General of Madras Presidency.

 

Iyer entered politics in 1912. He was appointed member of the Executive Council of the Governor of Madras and he served for a term of 5 years. During World War First, he supported Indian Volunteer Movement. Iyer served as a member of the Council of State in 1922-1923 and known for his stand against Simon Commission. He also served as a member of the Imperial Legislative Assembly and later became member of the new Indian Military College Committee. He was against the partition of Indian into two parts. He was given Knighthood by British.
