P. K. Gopi Biography

P. K. Gopi is a noted poet and lyricist of Malayalam. Currently he is a member of Kerala Sahitya Akademi. As a lyrist, he has penned lyrics for about 25 Malayalam movies, most belonging to the melodious era of 1990’s. Dhanam, Bhumika, Mukti, Sasneham, Narayam, Kusruti kaattu, Neelagiri, Ottayal pattalam and Peruvannapurathe Visheshangal are his most memorable movies. For his literary career he has won numerous awards including - Mahakavi P. Kunjiraman Nair Award, Pala Sahridaya Samithi Award, Sanjayan award and Mundasheri Memorial Award. He has published more than 15 books in Malayalam poetry and many of his works have been translated to English and other languages. He retired as a Physiotherapist from government service.

Gopi belongs to Angadikkal, Pattanamthitta and he was born in the year 1949. His school education was completed at Angadikkal S. N. V. High School followed by Pathanapuram St. Stephens College and Velloor Christian Medical College where he specialized as a Physiotherapist. Later he worked as a physiotherapist in government service. He carried his writing career in parallel to this profession. As a noted lyricist of Malayalam, his most memorable songs are Cheera poovukalkkumma of Dhanam and Sreerama naama japasaara of Narayaneeyam which remains close to his heart too. He has been associated with Raveendran and Johnson to give many melodious songs of 1990’s. ‘Thaane poovitta moham’ of Sasneham gave State award to playback singer Venugopal. Thaarapadham chethoharam of Sasneham is also a memorable song. It was one of the rarest songs sung by S.P.B for Malayalam.

Among the honours received, Vennikkulam Memorial Literary Award for his anthology of poems entitled Chiranthanom in the year 2006 needs special mention. He has also penned lyrics for many songs for Doordarshan and other television channels.
