P. Harikrishna Biography

P. Harikrishna is an Indian chess player who became the youngest grandmaster in 2001. He is ranking number three in India after Viswanathan Anand and Krishnan Sasikiran. He is ranking number 8 in Asia and 76th in the world according to the FIDE rating as on July 2011.

 

He has won Junior Chess Championship in November 2004 and in August 2006 he won the Chess 960 Junior Chess Championship in which he defeated Arkadij Naiditsch. He won Asian Chess Championship in May 2011.

 

He was born on 10th May 1986 in Guntur in Andhra Pradesh. When he won the under 10 world chess championship in Menorca in Spain he became very famous. He did well in many junior international events. He moved up in the ELO rating and so he was called to be the member of Indian National Team to take part in the Chess Olympiad in Istanbul.

 

He became the second Indian to win the Junior World Chess Champion in 2004 next only to Viswanathan Anand. He became the youngest Indian Grandmaster in 2001 beating the record of Anand. However in 2006 this was beaten by the child prodigy Praimarjan Negi who became the youngest Grand Master at the age of 13. But still P. Harikrishna holds the record of youngest Indian Super Grandmaster.

 

He became the India’s youngest international master in 2000 and got his Asian under 14 championship in 2000 in Tehran. He got Asian junior championship in 2001 in Kolkatta and World Junior Champion in 2004 and many more medals and honors. His peak rating was 2688 in April 2009.
