P. F. Mathews Biography

Poovankery Francis Mathew, shortly known as P. F. Mathews is an author and screenplay writer in Malayalam film and Television industries. He is a recipient of national award as well as many state awards. As a writer, he is noted for his distinct writing style and his noted works include -  “Chaavunilam”, "Njayarazhcha Mazha Peyyukayayirunnu”, Jalakanyakayum Gandarvanum" and “2004il Alice”. "Sararaanthal", "Mikhayelinte Santhathikal", "Megham" and National award winning movie, "Kutty Srank" starring Mammootty are his noted screenplay works.

 

He was born on 18th Feb 1960 in Ernakulam to Poovankery Francis and Mary Francis. His schooling was done at Don Bosco School and St. Augustine’s School, Kochi, and later graduated in Economics from St. Albert's College Kochi. He completed post-graduation in Malayalam in the year 1982. He started writing at the early age of 10 and by the age of 16, started publishing them in leading Malayalam magazines including Malayala Manorama, Kalakaumudi, Mathrubhumi, Madhyamam, Bhashaposhini and many more. His first story collection "Njayarazhcha Mazha Peyyukayayirunnu" was published in 1986, followed by a novel "Chaavunilam" in 1996. This novel received State Bank of Travancore award for the best novel. "Jalakanyakayum Gandarvanum" and “2004il Alice” are other published works.

 

He wrote first screenplay for a documentary film "Keep the City Clean". Later he wrote scripts for movies as well as television serials and received numerous awards as well. In 1991 he bagged the 'best script writer' award for his tele-serial "Sararaanthal" of Doordarshan.  He received his second state award for "Mikhayelinte Santhathikal" of Doordarshan in 1993. Same year he won Script writing competition held nation-wide by NFDC for "Naattukaaryam". Thantram (1986) was his debut film script. Kutti Shrank fetched him National Award for the best screen play for the year 2010.
