Omi Gurung Biography

Omi Gurung is an Indian Fashion designer of Nepali origin. He is also a well-known writer and green activist. Omi was born and brought up in Sikkim. Omi was a finalist in PETA India’s cutest vegetarian Next Door 2013. Omi's design collection “Integration- a new identity” won “The Most Creative Collection” award at Vogue Mystique Designer Awards 2005-06. The award was presented to him by Bollywood actress and politician, Vyjayantimala.

In his opinion, Green is not just a colour but is a verb and lifestyle! He is a true vegetarian and a great lover of green. He also owns Green Gangtok – an ecofriendly fashion boutique. As a fashion designer, he has been featured in many leading magazines of India, across the country. He is one among those rare names of the fashion industry who created a niche at an early age.

Omi was born Sandeep Gurung on 24 February 1986 in Sikkim. His father is R.K. Gurung, former Secretary, Department of Mines, Minerals & Geology, Government of Sikkim. His mother's name is Beena Gurung. The seeds of his green consciousness were given by his parents. Omi did his schooling from Holy Cross School, Tadong. Later he took graduation in fashion from Vogue Institute of Fashion Technology, where he was the college topper. He took Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism from Sri Sri Centre for Media Studies, Bangalore.

At the age of 22, he joined as the editor for Dateline Bangalore and later worked as a fashion editor for a youth magazine in Bangalore. He regularly writes on Fashion and Lifestyle related topics for several Indian dailies as well as international journals. He owns, ‘Green Gangtok’ an eco-friendly fashion boutique, through which he tries to promote green trend; first one of its kind in Sikkim.
