Omar Abdullah Biography

Omar Abdullah is an Indian politician from Kashmir. He serves as the 11th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. He belongs to the famous Abdullah family. With the help of the Congress party, he was sworn in as the chief minister on 5th January 2009. Before he became the chief minister he served as the member of 14th Lok Sabha representing Srinagar constituency.

Omar Abdullah was born on 10th March 1970 in Rochford, Essex in United Kingdom. His father is Farooq Abdullah and his grandfather is Sheikh Abdullah and all of them served as the Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir. His mother is Mollie, a British Christian. He studied at Burn Hall School at Srinagar. Then he studied at The Lawrence School at Sanawar. He continued his higher studies at Sydenham College at Mumbai and after finishing Bachelor of Commerce degree in this institution, he joined University of Strathclyde at Scotland for pursuing MBA which he did not complete.

He married Payal Nath daughter of Major Ram Nath, an Army officer on 1st September 1994. They have two sons Zahir and Zamir. He has one sister Sarah Abdullah who has married Sachin Pilot, son of Rajesh Pilot. He was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha at the age of 29 in 1998. In 1999 he was again elected tot eh 13th Lok Sabha. On 13th October 1999 he became the Union Minister of State, Commerce and Industry. On 22nd June 2001 he was made Union Minister of State for External Affairs and became the youngest Union Minister. But he resigned from this post on 23rd December 2002 to focus on his party works.

He escaped the two rifle grenades targeting on him on 9th July 2007. He gave a passionate speech in the 2008 Lok Sabha vote of confidence on 22nd July 2008 and this won him many fans. In 2008 Kashmir Elections the National Conference party won the maximum number of seats and with the coalition of Congress he became the 11th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir on 5th January 2009. Due to sex scandal, he submitted his resignation on 28th July 2009 but this was not accepted.
