O. V. Alagesan Biography

O. V. Alagesan was a freedom fighter and politician from Tamil Nadu. He belonged to Indian National Congress and has served as a parliamentarian. He was a member of Lok Sabha three times - from 1951 to 1957, 1962 to 1967 and from 1971 to 1979, thus remaining active in national level politics. He first got elected from Chingleput constituency, followed by Tiruthani and Arakkonam in the 1970s, when he was a prominent political figure from Tamil Nadu. He lived during the period 6 September 1911 – 3 January 1992. He served as India's Ambassador to Ethiopia from 1968 to 1971.

 

His full name is Ozhalur Viswanatha Mudaliar Alagesan. He was born on 6 September 1911 in Tamil Nadu. He was quite active in freedom struggle movement and quite active in politics, in the pre-independent era too. He was a member of the Constituent Assembly from 1946 to 1951. He got elected to Lok Sabha for the first time in 1951 from Chingleput. However he lost 1957 Lok Sabha elections. He returned in bang and was re-elected in 1962. He was elected to Lok Sabha two times in the 1970s too. Prior to it, he served as India's Ambassador to Ethiopia.

 

He served as a parliamentarian during the terms of both Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, and owns a long-term association with Congress party. During his tenure as Member of Parliament, he played a magnificent role in the development of Tamil Nadu. His centenary celebrations were conducted in 2011, where his efforts as a political leader were remembered. He was also a distinguished social reformer, administrator and promoter of Indian culture. He died on 3 January 1992 aged 81.
