O. P. Ramaswamy Reddiyar Biography

O. P. Ramaswamy Reddiyar was an Indian politician from Andhra Pradesh, who lived during 1895 – 1970. He belonged to Indian National Congress and was a prominent leader from south India in the 1940s and 1950s. He was also known as a freedom fighter in the pre-independent era of India. He served as the Chief Minister of Madras Presidency when India achieved freedom, and during his tenure Devadasi Dedication Abolition Act of 1947 and Madras Temple Entry Authorization Act 1947 were passed.

 

He served as the Premier of Madras Presidency from 23 March 1947 to 6 April 1949. Premier of Madras Presidency literally translates to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, and thus literally he is the first CM of Madras Presidency or Tamil speaking region in the independent India, just before the formation of independent Tamil Nadu state. He was a member of 1946 Madras Legislative Assembly Election, who succeeded Tanguturi Prakasam as Premier of Madras Presidency. P. S. Kumaraswamy Raja succeeded him and became the first CM of Madras State, precursor to the present day state of Tamil Nadu.

 

Omandur Ramasamy Reddiyar was born in 1895 in Omandur village, Tindivanam in the South Arcot district of Madras Presidency. He did his schooling at Walter Scudder school, and got involved with freedom struggle movement at a younger age. Reddy was a devotee of Vallalar. In the 1940s he was fully associated with politics, and got elected to 1946 Madras Legislative Assembly Election. In fact he was the ruling CM or Premier of Madras Presidency, when India achieved freedom from British.

 

As a Premier of Madras Presidency, he witnessed many historic reforms and transformations within his state. During his tenure Madras Temple Entry Authorization Act 1947 was passed, giving rights to all Hindus irrespective of caste to enter temple for worship. He also passed Devadasi Dedication Abolition Act of 1947, which put an end of Devadasi system in Tamil Nadu temples.
